Mimic Shiner (Notropis volucellus)

The Mimic Shiner is a widespread and common species found across eastern North America, including much of Alabama. This is a species complex containing multiple undescribed species. Mimic Shiners inhabit backwaters in rivers, creeks, and lakes. The distinguishing character for the Mimic Shiner (and other species in the Notropis volucellus species group) is lateral-line scales on the front half of the body that are twice as tall as they are wide.
