Redlips Darter (Etheostoma maydeni)

The Redlips Darter is found in the Cumberland River Drainage in north-central Tennessee and south-central Kentucky where populations are heavily fragmented due to reservoir construction. This species lives in slow moving large creeks and rivers. It lives in pools along the banks strewn with boulders and woody debris. As its common name suggests, the Redlips Darter has red coloring on its lips. It also has a greatly enlarged second dorsal fins as well as oblique dusky bars along its side.
