The Central Mudminnow is found in Mississippi River, Great Lakes, and Hudson Bay drainages from Tennessee to Manitoba and Quebec, including the lower Tennessee River Drainage. As the common name suggests, Central Mudminnows live over soft, muddy substrate, in slow waters of streams, sloughs, and swamps. They are tolerant of low oxygen and extreme water temperatures, an adaptation for these habitats.
