Green Sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus)

The Green Sunfish is common throughout much of central North America, including the Mobile Basin, Tennessee, and Cumberland river drainages. They have been introduced widely beyond their native range. They live in a wide range of habitats and are tolerant of poor water quality. As the common name suggests, Green Sunfish have iridescent blue green coloration on their lower head. Like other species of the genus Lepomis, males build nests by fanning the gravel or sand substrate with their tail.
