Mud Sunfish (Acantharchus pomotis)

Description:

The Mud Sunfish earned its name from the muddy substrate it lives over in the backwaters of creeks and sloughs. While most of the populations of Mud Sunfish occur along the Atlantic Coast and eastern Gulf Coast drainages, there is an isolated population in the lower Tombigbee River in the Mobile Basin. Mud Sunfish are unusual because they have horizontal stripes on their face and sides instead of vertical stripes like most other sunfishes.
