Undescribed Coldwater Darter (Etheostoma sp. cf. ditrema)

The undescribed Coldwater Darter is found in spring-fed creeks in the middle Coosa River System in east-central Alabama. This species is thought to be distinct from the Coldwater Darter (E. ditrema) based on morphology and genetics. They typically live and spawn in aquatic vegetation. A distinguishing character for the undescribed Coldwater Darter (and other species in the Gulf Darter species group) is a depigmented stripe on their back in front of the dorsal fin.
