Largescaled Spinycheek Sleeper
Eleotris amblyopsis
About This Fish

The Largescaled Spinycheek Sleeper resides over muddy substrates in estuaries and the lower reaches of freshwater systems from North Carolina to the Gulf of Mexico and south to Brazil. It is unknown why this family, Eleotridae, earned the common name “sleeper.” They are ambush predators with the ability to change colors to blend into the background.
