The Rush Darter is a federally endangered species that has a small, fragmented range in the upper Black Warrior River system. As the common name suggests, Rush Darters are found associated with aquatic vegetation (including rushes) in springs and spring-influenced creeks over soft substrate. They often have an orange or red marking in their eyes.
