The Southern Flounder is widespread along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from North Carolina to northern Mexico. This predominantly marine species also enters freshwater streams and rivers, often over soft substrate. Like all flatfishes, Southern Flounders have both eyes on one side of their head. They differ from other flatfishes in the region by having their eyes on the left side of their head and a strongly arched lateral line.
