The Tuskaloosa Darter is restricted to the upper Black Warrior River System in Alabama. Its common name is derived from Chief Tuskaloosa, a Native American leader known as “The Black Warrior” for whom the river is named. They are found in rocky riffles and runs of creeks to medium rivers. Like many other members of the subgenus Nothonotus, Tuskaloosa Darters have a moderately pointed snout.
