As the common name suggests, the Alabama Hog Sucker is found in the Mobile Basin, primarily in Alabama as well as Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee, and in the Chattahoochee River System in Georgia and Alabama. They live in a variety of habitats of creeks to small rivers. Like other members of the genus Hypentelium, Alabama Hog Suckers have large lips and a mouth that can extend downward for feeding on the substrate.
