The Banded Pygmy Sunfish is found in Gulf and Atlantic coast drainages from Texas to North Carolina and in the Mississippi Embayment north to Illinois and Indiana. They are found over soft substrate in swamps, sloughs, and slow-moving streams, typically associated with vegetation. As the common name suggests, Banded Pygmy Sunfish have bands along their side and reach a maximum size of 1.75 inches.
