The Black Buffalo is found throughout the Mississippi River Drainage, including the Tennessee and Cumberland river drainages, as well as in Great Lakes Drainages. They live in pools and backwaters of small to large rivers, lakes, and impoundments. Like other species in the genus Ictiobus, Black Buffalo have a long, curved dorsal fin and a mouth on the underside of their head.
