The Blacktail Redhorse is found in the Mississippi River from Louisiana to Tennessee, as well as Gulf Coast drainages from Texas to Florida, including the Mobile Basin. They live over a variety of substrates in creeks to rivers and reservoirs. As the common name suggests, Blacktail Redhorses have a black stripe on the lower part of their tail. Like other redhorses, Blacktail Redhorses have large lips and a mouth that can extend downward for feeding on the substrate.
