These remarkable swamp-dwelling fish are widespread across eastern North America. Bowfin have adaptations for the low oxygen environments where they occur; they can gulp air and use their vascularized swim bladder to breathe. Their extremely long dorsal fin and obvious black spot near the base of their tail make them a distinctive fish, and they can be distinguished from the invasive Snakehead by their shorter anal fin.
