The Bronze Darter is found in the Coosa and Tallapoosa river systems of the Mobile Basin in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. They live over gravel substrate in upland creeks to medium rivers. As the common name suggests, breeding male Bronze Darters develop a golden belly with bright orange dorsal fins. While most darters are found on stream bottoms, members of the genus Percina tend to be found higher in the water column because they retain a swim bladder.
