The Burrhead Shiner is restricted to upland streams in the Mobile Basin in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. They are found in rocky and sandy pools of creeks to small rivers. As the common name suggests, breeding male Burrhead Shiners have many small white breeding tubercles, horny projections used in spawning, on the top of their head.
