As the common name suggests, Coosa Shiners are found in the Coosa River System as well as the Tallapoosa River System of the Mobile Basin in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. They live in clear pools and runs over gravel substrate in streams to medium rivers. Like many other species in the genus Notropis, Coosa Shiners have a pattern on their lateral line scales that resembles cross-stitching.
