The Flier is widespread throughout the Coastal Plain from Texas to Virginia and upstream in the Mississippi Embayment to Illinois and Indiana. They are found in pools and backwaters of rivers and bayous usually associated with vegetation. The scientific name macropterus refers to the large dorsal and anal fins of the Flier.
