The Frecklebelly Madtom has a disjunct distribution in the Pearl River Drainage and Mobile Basin in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. They live in rocky riffles of medium to large rivers. As the common name suggests, Frecklebelly Madtoms have spots along their bellies. As members of the catfish family, all madtoms have whiskers (barbels) around their mouth with taste buds that aid in finding food. Like all members of the genus Noturus, Frecklebelly Madtoms are smaller catfish reaching a maximum size of 3.75 inches.
