The Ghost Shiner is widespread throughout the Great Lakes, Mississippi River and Gulf Coast drainages from Mexico to Louisiana northward to Ontario, including the Tennessee and Cumberland river drainages in Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky. They are found in quiet pools and backwaters of small to large rivers. As the common name suggests, Ghost Shiners have a “ghostly” appearance due to their translucence from the lack of pigment on their body.
