As the common name suggests, the Gulf Killifish is widespread along the Gulf Coast from Mexico to Florida, but is also found along the Atlantic Coast in Florida and in Cuba. They live in vegetated bays and canals over soft substrate usually in salt water. Their scientific name, grandis, reflects the larger size of Gulf Killifish compared to other topminnows. As with all topminnows, they live at the top of the water column.
