The Mountain Shiner is found in the Tennessee River Drainage in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia as well as the Coosa and Cahaba river systems in the Mobile Basin in Alabama and Georgia. As the common name suggests, Mountain Shiners live in sandy or rocky pools in small to medium upland creeks. Like other members of the genus Lythrurus, Mountain Shiners have small scales on their nape.
