Redspotted Sunfish
Lepomis miniatus
About This Fish

The Redspotted Sunfish is found in Gulf Coast drainages from Texas to Alabama, including the Mobile Basin, as well as in the Mississippi Embayment to Illinois, including the Tennessee River Drainage. They live over soft substrate in pools of creeks, swamps and lakes with aquatic vegetation. As the common name suggests, Redspotted Sunfish have red spots along their sides. Like other species of the genus Lepomis, males build nests by fanning the gravel or sand substrate with their tail.
