The Ribbon Shiner is found in Gulf Coast drainages from Texas to Louisiana as well as Mississippi River Drainage to Illinois, including the Tennessee and Cumberland river drainages. They live in a variety of substrates in pools of small to medium creeks. Like other members of the genus Lythrurus, Scarlet Shiners have small scales on their nape.
