The River Shiner is a widespread species found in central Canada and the central United States in the Hudson Bay, Red River, and Lake Michigan drainages to the north and throughout the Mississippi River Drainage from Colorado to Pennsylvania south to Louisiana. They are found in the lower Tennessee and Cumberland rivers. As the common name suggests, River Shiners are found in pools and channels of medium to large rivers.
