The Slough Darter is found in Gulf Coast drainages from Texas to Alabama as well as north in the Mississippi River Basin to Illinois, including tributaries to the lower Tennessee and Cumberland river drainages. As the common name suggests, Slough Darters are found in slow-moving water over soft substrate and often associated with vegetation. These fish have a maximum size of 2.25 inches, making them one of the smaller darters.
