Snail Bullhead
Ameiurus brunneus
About This Fish

The Snail Bullhead is found in Atlantic Coast drainages from Virginia to Florida, the Apalachicola River System, and the upper Coosa River System of the Mobile Basin in Georgia. The population in the Mobile Basin is believed to be present due to stream capture. They live in rocky runs and pools of swift streams. As the common name suggests, Snail Bullheads eat snails as part of their diets. As members of the catfish family, all Bullheads have whiskers (barbels) around their mouth with taste buds that aid in finding food. Like all North American catfishes, they make nests and protect their eggs and young.
