The Southern Studfish is found in the Alabama and Chattahoochee river drainages in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. They are found in slow-moving water in small creeks to medium rivers in pools and backwaters. Southern Studfish have irregular rows of red and brown spots along their side and at the base of their fins. As with all topminnows, they live at the top of the water column.
