The Spangled Darter is restricted to the Duck River System in west-central Tennessee. It is found in slow-moving sections, usually pools and stream banks with sandy or rocky substrate, of small to medium fast-moving rivers. The Spangled Darter earned its name from the bright orange spots on the body and fins of breeding males.
