The Spot is found along Gulf and Atlantic coast drainages from Mexico to Massachusetts, including the Mobile Basin. They live in sand and mud substrate in marine and brackish waters. As the common name suggests, Spots have a large spot behind their head. Like other members of the drum family, they are able to make noise (or drumming sounds) using their gas bladder.
