The Weed Shiner has a disjunct distribution including Gulf Coast drainages from Texas to Florida, including the Mobile Basin, as well as Mississippi River, Great Lakes, and Hudson Bay drainages northward to Manitoba. As the common name suggests, Weed Shiners are found in slow-moving water associated with aquatic vegetation in streams and lakes. Like many other species in the genus Notropis, Weed Shiners have a pattern on their lateral line scales that resembles cross-stitching.
