About This Fish

The Bluegill is common throughout much of central and southeastern North America, including the Mobile Basin, Tennessee, and Cumberland river drainages. They have been introduced widely beyond their native range. They live in a wide range of habitats and are tolerant of poor water quality. As the common name suggests, Bluegills have blue on the underside of their head. Like other species of the genus Lepomis, males build nests by fanning the gravel or sand substrate with their tail.
