Dusky Darter
Percina sciera
About This Fish

The Dusky Darter is found in Gulf Coast drainages from Texas to Alabama, including the Mobile Basin, as well as in the Mississippi and Ohio river drainages from Illinois to West Virginia, including the Tennessee and Cumberland river drainages. They live over gravel in fast water in creeks to medium rivers in association with structure. As the common name suggests, Dusky Darters have dark pigmentation on the upper half of their head and body. While most darters are found on stream bottoms, members of the genus Percina tend to be found higher in the water column because they retain a swim bladder.
