About This Fish

The Gizzard Shad is a wide-ranging species throughout most of the eastern and central United States and north to Canada. They are found in deep areas of medium to large rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. The last ray of the dorsal fin is extremely elongated in members of this genus. They can be distinguished from the similar Threadfin Shad (D. petenense) by having a lower positioning of their mouth.
