The Golden Redhorse is widespread across much of central North America in the Mississippi River, Great Lakes, Hudson Bay, and a few Gulf and Atlantic coast drainages from Alabama to Manitoba, including the Mobile Basin, Tennessee, and Cumberland river drainages. They live in a range of currents in streams to rivers over a variety of substrates. As the common name suggests, Golden Redhorses have a golden or brassy coloration along their sides. Like other redhorses, Golden Redhorses have large lips and a mouth that can extend downward for feeding on the substrate.
