About This Fish

The Longear Sunfish is found throughout central North America, including the Mobile Basin, Tennessee, and Cumberland river drainages. They live in pools of small to medium streams associated with structure. As the common name suggests, Longear Sunfish have long “ears,” which are extensions of the opercular cover over their gills. Like other species of the genus Lepomis, males build nests by fanning the gravel or sand substrate with their tail.
