The Northern Hog Sucker is widespread across eastern North America from Texas to Ontario, including the Tennessee and Cumberland river drainages. They live in a variety of habitats of creeks to small rivers. Like other members of the genus Hypentelium, Northern Hog Suckers have large lips and a mouth that can extend downward for feeding on the substrate
