Northern Studfish
Fundulus catenatus
About This Fish

The Northern Studfish has a disjunct distribution in the middle and lower Mississippi River Basin, including the Tennessee and Cumberland river drainages. They are found in slow-moving water in small creeks to medium rivers in pools and backwaters. Northern Studfish are one of the more striking topminnows with rows of red brown spots along their side and fins, yellow edges on their fins, and bright blue on the side of breeding males. As with all topminnows, they live at the top of the water column.
