The Scarlet Shiner is found in the Ohio River Drainage, including the Tennessee and Cumberland river drainages, as well as a few adjacent tributaries to the Mobile Basin in Alabama. They live in a variety of substrates in pools of small to medium creeks. As the common name suggests, Scarlet Shiners have a red coloration on their fins. Like other members of the genus Lythrurus, Scarlet Shiners have small scales on their nape.
