About This Fish

The Whitetail Shiner has a disjunct distribution with one population occurring the Ozarks and Ouachitas and the other population primarily in the Tennessee and Cumberland river drainages as well as the headwaters of other adjacent river drainages. They are found in rocky runs of headwater streams to small rivers. As the common name suggests, the Whitetail Shiner has two white blotches at the base of the tail. Like other members of its genus, Whitetail Shiners have diamond-shaped scales and spawn in crevices.
