American Soles

 (Achiridae)

Soles are specialized fishes that are mostly found in marine environments of tropical and temperate areas of the world. These fishes reside on their side on the bottom, with both eyes on the right side facing up and the left side (lacking eyes and most pigment) facing the bottom. They are relatively small, have an upper jaw that hangs over the lower, and usually lacking pectoral fins. There are 35 species of American Soles in 7 genera, and they are often mistaken for another group of flatfishes, flounders, but differ by their attached pelvic and anal fins and their missing pectoral fins.
